Tottenham continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against QPR on Saturday at 3pm (UK time).
There were plenty of positives to take from Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge of Spurs, with Spurs playing some exciting football at times and returning to the continental picture with Europa League qualification. However, inconsistency and a relatively poor defensive record resulted in the Lilywhites missing out on the Champions League place they so greatly craved, while their wait for a trophy continues, Postecoglou knows he must improve in year two.
As for QPR, they looked doomed to relegation to League One for much of last season before an excellent late run saw them climb to 18th, preserving their Championship status with a six-point gap on the bottom three.
There are multiple areas Spurs will look to strengthen this summer and one of them is surely central midfield. Yes, the Lilywhites already have Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall coming through the door, but both are only 18 years old and are surely more realistic options for the future.
At a more senior level, Postecoglou can currently call upon Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Sarr, Yves Bissouma, Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. However, the latter two are being heavily linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, with Leeds understood to be pushing for Skipp and Hojbjerg courted by Galatasaray.
The departure of those two would leave Postecoglou short-handed, but Spurs are already thought to be lining up a replacement in the form of Conor Gallagher.
Tottenham’s interest in Gallagher isn’t breaking news. However, according to The Athletic, Chelsea are braced for offers finally hitting the table for the midfielder — who made five appearances in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final this summer.
It’s understood Chelsea value Gallagher in the £40-50m region and are willing to sell in order to boost their PSR position. Aston Villa were also reportedly interested in Gallagher but are unlikely to take action as they push to complete a deal for Everton’s Amadou Onana, potentially clearing the path for Tottenham.
QPR will hope to have Lyndon Dykes available in some capacity after the striker missed Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign through injury. New signings Liam Morrison and Hevertton Santos could also get their first starts for the club.
Cristian Romero, Giovani Lo Celso, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin are all unavailable as they rest up following respective Copa America and Euro 2024 commitments. We’re likely to see both Gray and Bergvall receive some minutes following their arrivals.
QPR vs Tottenham is being played at Loftus Road in London. The match kicks off on Saturday, 20th July, at 3pm (UK time) and will be streamed live in the UK on QPR+ and SpursPlay.
