FLW's QPR fan pundit has given his verdict on the future of Charlie Kelman amid an offer from MLS
QPR have rejected an initial offer from Charlotte FC for forward Charlie Kelman.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the MLS team are hoping to strengthen their forward options after Patrick Agyemang’s move to Derby County.
Kelman is entering the final year of his current contract with the Hoops, which has led to uncertainty over his future at Loftus Road.
The 23-year-old spent last season on loan with Leyton Orient, contributing 21 goals and five assists from 46 appearances in the regular League One campaign.
When asked about the offer for Kelman, FLW’s QPR fan pundit Louis Moir claimed that this is a sign that a departure is imminent.
He believes that the situation is a sign of the club’s progress behind the scenes, as he wants them to hold out for more money instead of accepting the first deal that comes through.
“I’d be really interested to know what the bid was from Charlotte FC for Kelman,” Moir told Football League World.
“To be honest, I don’t think this is a sign of us looking to keep him, I think it’s the complete opposite.
“I think, with the Charlie Kelman situation, it’s as simple as if he doesn’t sign a new deal he has to be sold, it’s as simple as that.
“He’s got one year on his contract remaining, his stock is really high, it seems that he’s not going to sign a new deal with QPR, then we have to get rid of him.
“I’m glad we’re seemingly holding out for a decent amount of money for him, with one year left on his contract I’d be surprised if we manage to get more than a couple million for him, but if we do then that would be another great decision from [CEO Christian] Nourry and everyone at the club.
“We’ve shown now that we’re being run that a decision like that, we probably would be accepting peanuts for him a few years ago.”
Moir is unsure whether Kelman is ready for the step up to the Championship, and believes a new striker would be needed this summer regardless of if he stays or not.
“I’ve been on the fence for a while now regarding Kelman after his season last year, obviously I’ve remained with that doubt whether he’d step up to Championship level, and I think, like I say, with his contract situation if he doesn’t sign he has to go,” he continued.
“So it’s just whether now or not we get a few million or if there’s some sort of deal agreed potentially with a sell-on clause cause he’s obviously still young.
“Potentially appearances he may make for the United States’ national side, he played for them at youth level, you never know if he goes to MLS, starts bagging goals out there, he could easily get called up to the USA team, could be something in the deal if we sell where we get money based on international appearances.
“There’s potential here for us to make a bit of money on a player who has got one year left, doesn’t really seem from the outside that he’s happy at QPR and I’d be more than happy to see him go for a decent bit of money and that could be reinvested in not just one but two or three players.
“So, I think we’d be looking to sign a striker regardless of whether Kelman stays or not, and we could end up buying someone who is going to be better than him or would be better than him in the Championship.”
QPR’s season gets underway on 9 August with a home clash against Preston North End.
If QPR can get £2 to 3 million for Kelman, then that could be good business for this summer, especially if a sell-on clause or performance-related add-ons are inserted in the deal.
The forward showed he can compete to a very high standard in League One, and could possibly be useful in the Championship.
However, the situation with his contract means a sale this summer is the more reasonable option.
