Chelsea lost 2-1 against current Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday evening in the Sky Sports game in front of the TV cameras.

We have spoken a lot about the game yesterday and highlighted how Chelsea really deserved more from this game and certainly turned up and made a real game of it, and actually having the majority of possession at Anfield. Not many teams can go there and do that. So Chelsea had a lot to be positive about in this game despite losing, which unfortunately is essentially all that will matter in this game. Points is what clubs need, but Chelsea certainly walked away from this game with heads held high.

EXCLUSIVE! Barcelona eyeing Chelsea midfielders, Blues could capitalise on their interest in Barca defender – and also now eyeing Benfica centre back!

There was some interesting starting selection decisions made by Enzo Maresca though that are being highlighted now.

With Maresca, it’s clear to see now that he has a best starting Xl that he wants to use when everyone is fit, and he had the rare opportunity to pick that team on Sunday.

In the midfield there was a massive decision to make, with Romeo Lavia being back fit and available again. With him, Moises Caicedo, and Enzo Fernandez available, Chelsea fans knew one who have to miss out.

Fernandez dropped to the bench

Enzo is in competition with Lavia now

It was Enzo Fernandez who missed out, with Lavia getting the nod, and it proved to be the right decision, if not a bit of a surprising one. So does that mean Lavia now starts in Maresca’s best Xl? Time will tell.

BBC pundit Nigel Reo-Coker though, was puzzled by this selection, but puzzled in a good way.

He said:

“The one thing that’s actually puzzling to me though, I looked at the midfield partnership of [Romeo] Lavia and [Moises] Caicedo today and I felt that’s the best Chelsea have looked in midfield. They looked strong in there.

“And it goes to the point again now at the start of the season, the Enzo Fernandez incident – you make him club captain, and yet he’s not playing in probably one of your biggest games of the season up to date so far, away at Anfield against title contenders Liverpool. So that’s quite another interesting part in this whole game today.”
