Inter Miami face a huge test this Sunday as they go up against PSG in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Inter de Miami had a solid group stage run. They kicked things off with a 0-0 draw against Al Ahly, grabbed an impressive win over European powerhouse Porto, and wrapped things up with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Palmeiras. Lionel Messi has been at the heart of it all, playing a key role in getting his team out of the group and into the knockout rounds.
PSG’s journey has been a bit of a rollercoaster. They crushed Atlético Madrid 4-0 in their opener, then surprisingly lost to Brazilian underdogs Botafogo. They managed to bounce back with a win over the Seattle Sounders in their last group game. And all of this without Ousmane Dembélé, one of the Ballon d'Or favorites, who’s still out with an injury.
Here's everything you need to know ahead of the Matchday 2 clash.
Time: Thursday, June 29, 12 pm ET
Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
TV & streaming in the US: TNT, TruTV, UniMas, TUDN, DAZN
Messi relies heavily on the wingers to help him find passing lanes and create space, which makes strong performances from Taedo Allende and Telasco Segovia absolutely crucial. The Argentine star is most dangerous when he receives the ball closer to the box, where he can do what he does best: dribble, shoot, and create chances.
Jordi Alba has returned after missing the opener but has only made the bench in the last two games, and it’s still uncertain if he’ll be ready to start. Gonzalo Luján is almost certainly out with a hamstring issue, while David Ruiz and Yannick Bright remain doubtful after training separately from the squad.
In goal, Drake Callender remains sidelined after hernia surgery, meaning Oscar Ustari, who has impressed in the first two matches, will continue as the starter.
Luis Enrique made minimal changes in PSG’s group stage finale against the Seattle Sounders, sticking with his regular starters. However, he could opt to bring back Gonçalo Ramos up front, after starting Senny Mayulu in his place in the only lineup change against the MLS team.
The top Ballon d'Or favorite, Ousmane Dembélé is still working out on his own, and it’s not clear when he’ll be back for PSG. He hasn’t played in the Club World Cup yet because of a thigh injury. Bradley Barcola missed the first game with some knee soreness but is back on the bench now and might even start next time.
Inter Miami projected lineup (4-4-2, right to left)
Oscar Ustari- Marcelo Weigandt, Tomas Aviles, Maximiliano Falcon, Noah Allen- Tadeo Allende, Federico Redondo, Sergio Busquets, Telasco Segovia- Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez
PSG Projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left)
Gianluigi Donnarumma-Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes-Joao Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz-Desire Doue, Goncalo Ramos, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Inter Miami are the only MLS team left in the Club World Cup knockouts and one of just two Concacaf sides still standing. They’ve already surprised a lot of people, but this is a whole different level because PSG are likely to dominate in every part of the game.
The Herons have been hanging tough against some top European talent, but beating the reigning Champions League champs?
Messi can shine and can score, especially from set pieces against one of his old clubs, but all players must be at their best if they want to compete against the French and make the quarterfinals.
