PSG have won five of their last 13 European home games against English clubs, losing four; Aston Villa have never won any of their five previous visits to France.
This is Paris Saint-Germain's 13th attempt to win the Champions League under Qatari ownership, hoping it'll be lucky number 13, while Aston Villa supporters are channeling the spirit of 1982, dreaming of going all the way, just as they did 43 years ago.
Villa actually finished higher in the league phase, securing eighth spot on the final matchday, before swatting aside Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate in the round of 16. Two late goals snatched victory at Jan Breydelstadion, before Marco Asensio bagged a brace back at Villa Park. Overall, Unai Emery's team have now won seven on the spin in all competitions, most-recently beating Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening, courtesy of quick-fire early goals from Morgan Rogers and then Donyell Malen.
Thus, the Claret and Blue Army are through to the FA Cup semi-finals, sit sixth in the Premier League table and are ready for this Champions League clash, just the Villans' sixth major European quarter-final. So, with a second leg in the Midlands to come, can Villa keep this tie alive in the French capital?
As for Paris Saint-Germain, many are now touting them as favourites to win this tournament for the very first time. Luis Enrique's side concluded the league phase with three straight wins, most-notably beating Manchester City, before demolishing Brest 10-0 in the first knockout round. Then, what really grabbed everyone's attention was les Rouge-et-Bleu's round of 16 tie, eliminating Liverpool.
In truth, PSG outplayed the Premier League champions-elect throughout the 210+ minutes, but required a penalty shootout to prevail at Anfield, with Désiré Doué converting the decisive kick. Domestically, les Parisiens rubber stamped an 11th Ligue 1 title in just 13 seasons on Saturday, on course to become the first French top-flight team in history to go an entire league campaign unbeaten. This trophy though is the one they crave above all else, so can they claim a first leg advantage at Parc des Princes?
These two clubs have never previously met.
Captain Marquinhos is suspended, having been shown his third yellow card of the competition at Anfield, so Lucas Beraldo will partner Willian Pacho at centre-back, while Presnel Kimpembe has seen just 67 minutes of action this season following an Achilles tendon rupture in February last year.
That enforced change aside, Luis Enrique is expected to name the same starting lineup that claimed victory at Anfield last month. João Neves will be back in midfield, while Ousmane Dembélé will lead the attack, flanked by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola; Lee Kang-in is out due to a foot injury. Fabián Ruiz and talisman Dembélé would sit out the trip to Villa Park if cautioned.
Paris Saint-Germain predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Hakimi, Beraldo, Pacho, Mendes; João Neves, Vitinha, Fabián; Dembélé, Barcola, Kvaratskhelia.
We've already mention him, but we're going to do so again. Ousmane Dembélé has 32 goals to his name this season, a career-best tally, 27 of which have come in 23 appearances since 15 December.
Unai Emery made eight changes for Saturday's win over Nottingham Forest, underlining that he certainly has options. The entire back four will revert to the one that beat Brighton a week ago, while Boubacar Kamara is expected to displace fit-again Amadou Onana at the base of midfield.
Further forward, Emery has some tough decisions to make. Marco Asensio, who's averaging a goal every 69 minutes in claret and blue, is eligible to face his parent club, so will he start, with Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers, Jacob Ramsey and John McGinn all viable alternatives?
Andrés García and Donyell Malen, who's scored in the last two, will not feature, as neither are in the UEFA squad, while Ross Barkley and Leon Bailey are injured. Lastly, French international duo Lucas Digne and Kamara would miss the return leg if booked.
Marcus Rashford famously scored a stoppage time penalty to knockout PSG six years ago, so back at the Parc des Princes, can he produce a massive moment in the French capital again?
Despite Villa's excellent form, we are backing PSG to claim a first leg lead in Paris, expecting the French champions to have too much attacking firepower: Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Aston Villa.
