Portugal was eliminated from UEFA Euro 2024 after losing to France in a penalty kick shootout (5-3) on Friday night at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany.

The elimination meant Cristiano Ronaldo played his last Euro contest for the Portuguese national team. Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes was one of the players in the starting 11 for Portugal against France.

Mendes played the entire match and converted his penalty kick in the shootout. However, his efforts weren’t enough, and now Portugal might have to turn the page on the Cristiano Ronaldo era unless he’s keen on playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After the loss, Mendes spoke to beIN SPORTS and was asked about the disappointing result and Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.

“It’s tough,” Mendes told the outlet (h/t Le10Sport). “We gave it our all, and nothing was missing. The team had chances, but we didn’t score—that’s football for you. We need to keep our heads up and keep going. They’re a great team, but we’re good too.

“It was a good match. We lost, and that’s just how it goes. In the penalty shootout, they scored all their shots—that’s just how football is. Cristiano Ronaldo? We haven’t talked yet, we have time for that.”

If Mendes remains healthy, he will be part of Portugal’s present and future. This 2024-25 season could be a confidence booster as the 22-year-old aims to establish himself as one of the best left-backs in football.
