Today’s home match against Wolves has returning fan favourite Reece James as the cover star – but the real in depth interview is with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The Spanish stopper has been a regular for Enzo Maresca all season, despite having lost his starting place under Mauricio Pochettino last season. That isn’t without controversy – many fans don’t like him at all and think he’s a weak point in the team.

But whatever your feelings about Sanchez, it was interesting to hear his thoughts on how he had progressed under Maresca and his coaching staff. After a good preseason he claimed to be in the “best physical condition of my life” and explained how that was helping him as a keeper:

“I’ve been going back to my aggressive self – taking up high positions for through-balls, defending the area for crosses, defending cut-backs inside the box, commanding and talking to my team-mates, leadership… things that I always had. I think I’ve been doing that really well, probably my best season in that area of goalkeeping,” Sanchez explained.

That’s a little controversial – he’s had some great moments and some big saves, but never lets a game go by without making at least one hair-raising mistake.

Sanchez still working on obvious weak point in his game

Robert Sanchez speaks to Chelsea TV.

While the tall Sanchez has always been a good shot stopper, it’s his play with the ball at his feet that sometimes causes issues. He also explained how he had been working on this, and he claims “slowly improving.”

Sadly, many fans would dispute they’ve seen a notable improvement in this area over the year:

“Then, obviously, there’s playing out from the back and we’re training like that every day with Enzo and Micky [De Bernardin, goalkeeper coach], understanding what they want, and slowly improving.”
