Committed to youth development and education through sport, the PSG Academy, through the PSG Academy UK, is deploying a host of programmes aimed at youngsters, and welcome the heir to the UK throne during a refereeing workshop.
Players at the PSG Academy West Midlands had the honour of meeting Prince William during a referee training course at Sporting Khalsa FC.
A football fan and Patron of the Football Association (FA), Prince William talked with the young referees, coaches and players, highlighting the importance of developing football at all levels and the need to better support referees.
During the visit, the Prince also met representatives of the FA and Sporting Khalsa in order to better understand the issues surrounding access to football for youngsters from different backgrounds. He also took part in training sessions and discussions regarding the challenges faced by referees. His involvement made an impression on the young officials, who occupy a crucial role in the future of the game.
The PSG Academy West Midlands was created last year when the PSG Academy UK opened a regional centre at the Morton School in Wolverhampton, in partnership with Amethyst Sixth Form. This programme enables sixth form students to join the PSG Academy while also preparing for their A-levels or other qualifications. They benefit from a full range of training sessions, workshops on nutrition and well-being, modules on commerce and statistical analysis, as well as individual mentoring. This holistic approach ensures their development on and off the pitch.
Six players from the academy took part in the referee training session in order to obtain their refereeing qualifications, while also continuing their studies.
Wayne Spicer, Head of PSG Academy West Midlands Director and Behaviour and Attitudes Leader at Amethyst Sixth Form, emphasised the importance of the day: 'We are extremely grateful for the opportunities that have been offered to us, and this experience is a reminder of our good fortune in being involved in such an inspirational project. To be able to learn from highly qualified professionals, talk to the FA and see Prince William take such an interest in refereeing is an experience that will live long in the memory of our young players.'
The training session certainly left its mark on the young students. 'The training session was really beneficial,' explained Nana. 'I learned about the many ways to handle a match, whether as the referee or one of the assistants.'
