Our Premier League Awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend action.
Everton began life at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with a win on a historic afternoon for the club. The departure from Goodison Park was filled with emotion, but the Toffees now have a home that can rival any in the Premier League, and perhaps Europe.
After a deflating defeat at Leeds on opening night, Everton got their season up and running with new signing Jack Grealish impressive on his full debut. Grealish set up both goals in the 2-0 win over Brighton, while Jordan Pickford saved a penalty to cap a memorable occasion.
A fine atmosphere greeted the players, with the new-look siren and traditional Z-Cars deafening. Just listen to that noise.
Tottenham Hotspur produced the performance of the weekend to continue their perfect start under Thomas Frank. The North Londoners have often been kryptonite to Manchester City in recent seasons and it proved to be the case again at the Etihad.
Goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha sealed the win, but it was Pape Matar Sarr who was the heartbeat of the win. Spurs suffocated Pep Guardiola’s side with their press and the Senegal international led by example.
He hounded blue shirts all afternoon, including stealing possession in a dangerous area for the second goal. Spurs look far more solid in the infancy of Frank’s tenure and Sarr is a big reason for that. He was everywhere at the Etihad.
There’s not much to smile about at West Ham right now.
This opener from Lucas Paqueta against Chelsea was a rare positive.
What followed was not quite as special…
Manchester United’s winless start to the season continued with a draw at Fulham.
For Ruben Amorim, the statistics make for grim reading.
That’s an unsung hero right there.
Jordan Pickford rightly gets credit for the penalty save but think this fella deserves some praise.–
James Trafford. After a solid debut for Manchester City on the opening weekend, the goalkeeper endured a day to forget against Spurs.
Trafford was fortunate to escape a red card for a wild challenge on Mohammed Kudus and culpable for the second goal with a poor pass when playing out from the back.
The decision to try and play with Nico Gonzalez under pressure was naive at best. He’ll learn from this.
