Aston Villa took a massive step towards booking a place in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League with a 3-1 away victory over Club Brugge.

The Villains opened the scoring after three minutes when Leon Bailey finished exquisitely from a Tyrone Mings header to set the tone.

Villa could open up the Belgians but struggled to initiate good sequences, encouraging Club Brugge to level in the 12th minute.

The Premier League side toiled for that winner to make their job at Villa Park much easier and got a helping hand when Brandon Mechele inadvertently put the ball into his net with ten minutes to go.

Villa attacker Marco Asensio missed a golden opportunity to seal the win before converting from the spot to take his tally to five goals and secure victory.

Several Villans put in terrific performances across the park, and one that particularly stood out was defender Axel Disasi. After a horrendous showing against Crystal Palace, he bounced back with a solid outing in a critical game.

Disasi won four out of four aerial and two out of four ground duels contested. He also made two clearances and interceptions for Villa.

They said: “Disasi made his third appearance for Villa since joining on loan from Chelsea and played from right-back. Faced by Tzolis, Disasi celebrated after slowing the winger down and then blocking a cross in the 24th minute. It was a strong display from the Frenchman.”

The 26-year-old will hope to play his way into manager Unai Emery’s plans. After struggling for game time at Chelsea, he needs stability, and perhaps he can find it at Villa Park.

Disasi has been mostly sturdy for Villa, and the club could look to secure another loan for a full season before deciding whether to sign him permanently.
