Arsenal have struck a rich vein of form in the Premier League and they are aiming to extend their hot streak in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg away to Porto.

The Gunners have scored 21 goals in their first five league fixtures of 2024 but they face a solid Porto side who have won nine of their last ten home matches in all competitions.

Arsenal’s post-Christmas blip feels like a distant memory after a five-match winning streak in the Premier League, including 5-0 routs of Crystal Palace and Burnley, a 6-0 drubbing of West Ham and a 3-1 victory over title rivals Liverpool.

The Gunners switch their attention to the Champions League this week and only holders Manchester City and European powerhouses Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were ahead of them in the outright betting before the round of 16 kicked off.

A tie against Porto looks like a decent draw for Arsenal, who topped a group featuring PSV Eindhoven, Lens and Sevilla, scoring 16 goals in six games in their first Champions League campaign since 2016-17.

They did most of their best work at the Emirates Stadium, winning their three home games 4-0, 2-0 and 6-0, and they may need time to break down their hosts in Portugal.

Porto finished level on 12 points with Group H winners Barcelona and have kept five consecutive clean sheets at home in the Primeira Liga.

They suffered a shock 4-0 home defeat to Club Brugge in last season’s group stage but their six subsequent Champions League results on their own patch were victories over Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, Royal Antwerp and Shakhtar Donetsk, a 0-0 draw with Inter and a 1-0 loss to Barca in October.

Arsenal, buoyed by superb away wins at West Ham and Burnley on their last two away trips, should have enough quality to establish a first-leg lead.

Porto, though, have conceded only seven first-half goals in 22 league matches this season so the Draw-Arsenal selection is a tempting bet in the double result market.

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka has looked rejuvenated in recent weeks and the England winger should be backed to continue his fine goalscoring form against Porto.

Saka has scored seven times in his last six Premier League appearances, bagging braces in his last two outings, and his recent shot stats are hugely impressive.

The Gunners’ penalty-taker has racked up 34 attempts at goal in just seven league games since Christmas – despite being substituted in his last three matches – and he can add to a tally of three goals in 335 minutes in his maiden Champions League campaign.

The goals have been flowing freely for Arsenal in the Premier League but their last-16 first leg against Porto may be a tighter affair.

The Gunners scored only four times in three away matches in the group stage while Porto have conceded just five goals in 11 home league games, so under 2.5 goals is worth a bet.

Arsenal’s set-piece prowess has been a significant factor in their recent success and centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes, who has scored four goals in his last eight league appearances, can muster at least one attempt at goal.

Complete the Bet Builder by backing one or both teams not to receive a card. Porto picked up only 12 bookings in six group games and Arsenal have an exemplary disciplinary record on their return to the Champions League.

Arteta’s side collected just five yellow cards in six group matches and they are averaging only 1.6 cards per game in the Premier League this term.
