The Portland Timbers have announced their replacement for departing superstar Evander, completing the signing of Lens attacker David Costa for a reported fee of $6 million.
The Cascadia club had reportedly agreed to sign the Portuguese midfielder earlier in the winter window, but were waiting to finalize the sale of Evander to FC Cincinnati.
Costa has tallied 23 goal contributions in 123 games for Ligue 1 side Lens, after working his way through their youth setup.
He will become the centerpiece to a Timbers attack that set club-record goalscoring numbers in 2024, joining the likes of Jonathan Rodríguez, Felipe Mora, and Santiago Moreno at the top of the lineup for Phil Neville.
“We are elated to add a player with David’s ability and pedigree," said Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy.
“He has already shown his qualities at a very competitive level, both in the French league and in European competitions.
"This commitment speaks volumes to David’s ambition to depart the club he grew up in to take on an even bigger role here with the Portland Timbers.”
