We asked ChatGPT to decide which of Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City have the loudest fanbase.

With the two clubs now back in the same division for the first time in two years, supporters of Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City will be eagerly awaiting the return of the Devon derby.

Despite a strong second half of the campaign after Miron Muslic replaced Wayne Rooney in January, Plymouth were relegated from the Championship last season, but they will be aiming to challenge for an immediate return to the second tier under the guidance of new head coach Tom Cleverley.

The Pilgrims have lost a number of their key players this summer following relegation, such as Maxi Talovierov, Adam Randell, Mustapha Bundu and Ryan Hardie, but after the arrival of 10 new signings, including the likes of Brendan Wiredu, Bradley Ibrahim, Jamie Paterson and Owen Oseni, they look set to be among the promotion contenders next season.

It was a turbulent campaign for Exeter last season as they slid down the table following a strong start, but despite flirting with relegation at times, they eventually finished in a respectable 16th place to secure a fourth consecutive season of League One football.

The Grecians do not have quite the same level of spending power as their near neighbours, but they have brought in three new permanent signings so far this summer in Johnly Yfeko, Luca Woodhouse and Jayden Wareham, while Joe Whitworth, Sil Swinkels, Ryan Rydel and Ethan Brierley have all arrived at St James Park on loan.

The Devon derby is one of the first games Plymouth and Exeter supporters would have looked out for when the fixtures were released last month, and the first clash between the pair will take place on Saturday 25th October at Home Park, with the reverse meeting being held on Saturday 11th April at St James Park.

The Pilgrims and the Grecians last faced each other in the 2022-23 season, and Argyle came out on top on both occasions, with the six points they picked up against their local rivals contributing significantly to their League One title win under Steven Schumacher and their huge 101-point haul.

Plymouth have generally had the upper hand in the fixture in recent years, winning three of the last five meetings, as well as a penalty shootout victory in the EFL Trophy, but they did suffer a comprehensive 4-0 defeat at Exeter in League Two in the 2019-20 season on their way to promotion.

The Pilgrims and the Grecians will likely be competing at opposite ends of League One next season, which may give the Home Park outfit the advantage, but form can often go out of the window in derby games, so two intriguing clashes could be ahead.

As Plymouth and Exeter prepare to do battle once again, we asked ChatGPT which club has the loudest fanbase.

AI reveals whether Plymouth Argyle or Exeter City have the louder fanbase

Plymouth have frequently got the better of Exeter on the pitch in recent times, and according to ChatGPT, the Pilgrims also have the louder fanbase.

AI praised Argyle supporters for the passionate atmosphere they create at Home Park, particularly in the Devonport End, but it also noted the strength of the club's away following, pointing out that they regularly travel in large numbers on the road.

ChatGPT claimed that the Exeter faithful are devoted to their club, as shown by the fact that they are fan-owned, and it recognised the quality of the atmosphere at St James Park, especially in the famous Big Bank stand, but it believes that the greater size of the Plymouth fanbase and larger capacity of Home Park gives them the edge.

The Pilgrims' home ground has a capacity of 17,000, and they had an impressive average attendance of 16,478 last season, which certainly helped them to upset many big teams on their own patch, with their most notable result coming when they knocked Premier League champions Liverpool out of the FA Cup after a 1-0 victory back in February.

In contrast, the Grecians' home stadium can only hold 8,219, but with an average attendance of 6,513, they still managed to regularly fill a significant amount of the ground last season.

However, given the disparity in the size of the stadiums and fan bases of both clubs, it is easy to see why ChatGPT has decided that Plymouth supporters make more noise than Exeter fans.
