Plymouth Argyle are on the verge of completing a deal for Nikola Katic.
Plymouth Argyle are set to sign former Rangers defender Nikola Katic on loan until the end of the season.
This is according to Fraser Fletcher, who has detailed this outcome in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Argyle are currently languishing at the foot of the Championship table and have been unbelievably open at the back, conceding 62 goals in their opening 29 games.
In desperate need of defensive reinforcements, new head coach Miron Muslic has already secured one deal at the back, bringing in Tymoteusz Puchacz on loan from Holstein Kiel and Maksym Talovierov from LASK. Now, it appears he has lined up his third addition in Katic.
Muslic will be eager for the Bosnian to have an immediate impact and with his relative experience across Europe, it seems a strong move for the Pilgrims.
As detailed in the aforementioned report, it is understood that Argyle have agreed a loan deal with FC Zurich for Katic's services until the end of the season.
The defender entered his third year in Switzerland this year and has been a first-team regular for them until missing the two most recent game weeks.
At the start of this transfer window, Katic was linked with a potential return to his former club, Rangers. However, this move failed to materialise, with former Rangers player and football agent Craig Moore dismissing any chance of a deal being completed by the Ibrox club before the deadline.
This left a clear path for Argyle and they have signed the Bosnian international on a temporary deal until June. According to Fletcher, the defender is now flying to England to complete the final steps and sign his contract.
Plymouth's difficult season has been encapsulated by the struggles of some of their summer signings, with the likes of Victor Palsson having little impact since his arrival.
Katic should go some way towards addressing Argyle’s defensive frailties, and his regular appearances for Zurich this season should ensure he is ready to slot straight into the starting line-up at match fitness.
This is exactly what Muslic requires, with the defender bringing a wealth of experience from his time at clubs such as Rangers, HNK Hajduk Split, and Slaven Belupo.
While he may not be enough to steer them away from trouble single-handedly, he appears to be one piece of the puzzle, and with a busy end to the transfer window expected, Argyle could field a revamped XI when they face Liverpool in the FA Cup.
