The Pilgrims have been working hard to strengthen Tom Cleverley's playing squad this summer, ahead of what will be his first season in charge at Home Park next term.

Argyle have made no less than 10 new signings so far this summer, with the likes of Bim Pepple, Luca Ashby-Hammond, Ayman Benarous and Jamie Paterson all making moves to Devon.

Now the club have set their eyes north of the border in the hopes of landing their latest transfer target.

Reporting via his X account on Wednesday morning, Sky Sports News journalist Anthony Joseph has revealed that Plymouth have made a loan offer to Celtic for the services of Stephen Welsh.

Joseph states that the Scottish champions are considering this approach, with it being understood that Argyle wish to take the 25-year-old central defender on a season-long loan.

The former Scotland youth international spent last season out on loan with Belgian first division side KV Mechelen, who attempted to sign him permanently this summer but couldn't strike a deal with Celtic.

Welsh has two years remaining on his contract at Celtic Park, and is a product of the Glaswegian giants' academy system.

Welsh could be a superb signing for Plymouth Argyle

Having seen Nikola Katic exit the club after his loan spell at Home Park, and having sold Maksym Talovierov to Stoke City, Plymouth have been dealt some sizeable blows to the heart of their defence this summer.

The addition of Brendan Wiredu from Fleetwood Town has helped soften that blow, but evidently, Argyle feel as though they need to seek further reinforcements in that department in order to ensure they aren't left light in that area.

Welsh would certainly bring some strong pedigree to Devon, having made just shy of 70 appearances for Celtic, which has seen him play Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Conference League football too.

Welsh has picked up quite the silverware collection during his time with Celtic too, having won five Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups and three League Cup wins to his name.

However, he has also endured some injury troubles too, with Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers revealing he may require shoulder surgery this summer, after he was forced off in a pre-season game in early July due to a recurrence of a shoulder issue.

So, should he stay fit, Welsh could be an excellent player at League One level, and could quickly establish himself as a key player for Plymouth as they look to make an instant return to Championship football next season.
