A Dani Olmo masterclass secured RB Leipzig their first ever Supercup, defeating Bayern Munich 3-0.

It took RB Leipzig just three minutes to take the lead against Bayern Munich. After Bayern failed to clear their area following a free-kick, Olmo found himself in space to slot the ball past Sven Ulreich. After going behind, Bayern continued to probe with Mathys Tel spurning an excellent opportunity. The Rekordmeister looked to exploit RB Leipzig’s high line but Marco Rose’s side defended well. They also looked to use the pace of Lois Openda and Timo Werner, which resulted in a yellow card for Dayot Upamecano. Despite Bayern controlling possession, it was then Olmo who added a second for Leipzig just before the break with a stupendous bit of skill, dancing his way between Konrad Laimer and Matthijs de Ligt before slotting the ball past Ulreich.

Thomas Tuchel made three substitutes at the break with Kim Min-jae, Noussair Mazraoui and Kingsley Coman replacing Benjamin Pavard, Matthijs de Ligt and Konrad Laimer. Just five minutes later, Mazroui played in Serge Gnabry who played the ball across the six-yard box, but Mathys Tel’s outstretched foot failed to connect with the ball by millimetres. Tel and Jamal Musiala both then forced Blaswich into an excellent double save just prior to the hour mark. Olmo then completed his hat-trick from the spot after Mazraoui handled the ball.

RB Leipzig’s 3-0 win will certainly give them confidence heading into the season.

Dayot Upamecano, 6 – The former Leipzig man improved following a shaky opening 45 minutes for the Frenchman, who will likely be under pressure from summer arrival Kim Min-jae for a starting place alongside Matthijs de Ligt. Upamecano looked clumsy and although no slouch himself, lost out to Lois Openda on several occasions. Picked up an early yellow card but redeemed himself with a superb tackle in the final minute of stoppage time in the first-half. Vastly improved his performance in the second-half.

Serge Gnabry, 7 – Without a doubt Bayern Munich’s biggest threat in the final third. Pressed RB Leipzig players, created two big chances for Mathys Tel and saw his only effort hit the target.

Mathys Tel, 6 – The Frenchman had an excellent opportunity to level the tie just 13 minutes after Dani Olmo opened the scoring, but his effort was straight at Janis Blaswich. In the opening stages of the second-half, Tel was then millimetres of putting Bayern to within one but failed to get on the end of Gnabry’s low cross. Plenty of potential on show, but had multiple opportunities to score.

RB Leipzig – 2 (Olmo x3)

Janis Blaswich, 8 – A free transfer from Heracles Almelo last summer, Blaswich didn’t make his Bundesliga debut until August last year, at the age of 31. Coming in and replacing the injured Péter Gulácsi is no easy task but the German has done an incredible job. Tonight, Blaswich had great command of his area, excellent handling, distributing and aerial reach. Gulácsi will have a difficult task of displacing the German.

Dani Olmo, 9 – Although excellent at times last season, Olmo perhaps went under the radar largely because of Christopher Nkunku. Now that the Frenchman has left, this could be a huge season for Olmo. The Spaniard showcased great composure, technical ability and neat dribbling. His second on the night was sublime, before he added a third from the spot.

Xavi Simons, 8 – The Dutchman made his competitive debut for Leipzig, and was sensational. Playing in the pocket behind Timo Werner and Lois Openda, Simons showcased his nimble footwork but not only that, when it mattered consistently played a perfectly weighted ball to his new teammates.
