Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim decided to leave Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of the matchday squad for the trip to Etihad Stadium for the Premier League game against Manchester City today.
It initially appeared that the Portuguese had made a huge mistake as the Red Devils were 1-0 down until the 88th minute and he did not have plenty of quality attacking options off the bench to introduce into the game.
Fortunately for Man United and their boss, Bruno Fernandes drew them level after Amad Diallo was brought down in the box, while the Ivory Coast international forward bagged the winner in the 90th minute.
Rashford immediately took to social media platform Instagram to react to the result and break his silence following his omission from the squad.
It was a huge victory for Man United and Amorim would have been very relieved as a defeat or even a draw would have earned him criticism from some quarters.
“We try to evaluate everything: training, performance, game performance, engagement with the team-mates, pushing the team-mates up,” Amorim told Sky Sports before the game while explaining why Rashford and Garnacho were dropped.
“Everything is on the line when we analyse, try to choose the players. So that is my selection. Simple.
“I pay attention to everything, the way you eat, the way you put your clothes to go to a game. Everything. I make my evaluation and then I decide.
“There is a communication after the last training. They are alright. They had training this morning and I was there. They trained really well.”
Rashford was linked with a January transfer exit during the past week, and he needs to convince the Man United boss in the coming weeks that he has a future at the Old Trafford club.
He has not been impressive on the pitch in recent months, and it appears Amorim is not satisfied with his input in training either.
