Phil Foden picks up FWA Men’s Footballer of the Year award

Phil Foden has been named the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year this morning. The award is a fitting reward for an outstanding season from City’s academy poster boy. It has arguably been Foden’s best season of his career to date, and he has been rewarded with the prestigious award today.

Phil Foden garnered over 42% of the votes to beat out teammate Rodri and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice for the prestigious award. So far this season, Foden has scored 24 goals and added 10 assists in 48 appearances so far this season. His outstanding form has been a key component of Manchester City’s chase for a fourth consecutive Premier League title this season. He has also helped Pep Guardiola’s side make this season’s FA Cup final. They will take on Manchester United in this season’s final as they bid to make it back-to-back FA Cup wins. Foden’s game has gone to a new level this season as his new found maturity and talent have shone through all season. He has become City’s match winner on several occasions this campaign. His hat tricks against Brentford and Aston Villa were especially important in crucial City wins this season.

Speaking with mancity.com Foden was thrilled to be named the FWA Men’s Footballer of the Year. He also paid tribute to Pep Guardiola, his teammates, and the Manchester City staff for their role in his success. Foden said: “Being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year is a huge honour. I’m very, very happy to receive this award. But I could not have done it without the help of my teammates. We have a very special squad of players at City, and I’m privileged to be a part of that group. I want to thank all my team-mates as well as Pep and the coaches for all the support and advice they have given me.

Manchester City and Phil Foden will be action tomorrow at the Etihad Stadium as they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers. They will be hoping to pick up a precious three points to maintain their chase for a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
