As painful as it was witnessing Aberdeen supporters celebrate their Scottish Cup win on Saturday it was clear that they enjoyed and greatly appreciated the moment having being starved of success for so long…

It’s been 11 years since the Dons last lifted silverware in the form of the league cup and a whopping 35 years since they last had their hands on the Scottish Cup.

As Celtic supporters we can’t relate to that sort of situation as we are truly spoilt when it comes to winning trophies, but some of us of a certain age we can sort of relate to that elevation of joy when it comes to witnessing our side win a trophy after being deprived of the feeling for so long.

One of those such moments were experienced by Celtic supporters on this very day 30 years ago. After six long years without silverware we were handed the chance to banish that drought as we faced first division Airdrie in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden.

The 1990s had been a dreadful era as a Celtic supporter, but with the recent takeover by Fergus McCann and the side now managed by Celtic legend Tommy Burns we were on the right track and landing the Scottish Cup would herald a new dawn as the Winds of Change blew through Paradise.

As we made our way to Hampden still fresh on our minds was that dreadful League Cup final defeat to First Division Raith Rovers just six months previously and we knew there was no room for error against Airdrie. We simply had to win.

We prevailed and won 1-0 thanks to trademark Pierre Van Hoojidonk header assisted by a trademark Tosh Mckinlay cross. It was anything but a stylish display but we dug out a result in a rather tense forgettable game (a bit like the final at the weekend actually). Celtic did what they set out to achieve and the supporters cherished the moment greatly as they partied in the Hampden stands.

The perfect image that summed us all up was that of a tearful Peter Grant who played through the pain barrier to put in a Man of the Match. Peter was each and every single one of us, a massive Celtic supporter through and through.

After so long without success we treasured that feeling of winning a trophy once again and we genuinely appreciated it as we celebrated long into the night and the weeks ahead. It was the first trophy won by Celtic since the takeover but it would be far from the last. A golden era was starting but we just didn’t realise it at the time.

The days when we stood with pride and took defeat were coming to an end. It would lead to the death of Rangers. on this day 30 years ago, the clock started ticking.
