Chelsea’s sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have given an exclusive interview in which they shared their thoughts on Enzo Maresca.

Maresca was appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement in the summer after guiding Leicester to the Championship title last season.

The Italian signed a five year contract at Stamford Bridge and is the fourth permanent manager since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over in 2022.

Winstanley shares his thoughts on Maresca

Maresca has made a good start to life at Stamford Bridge and the 44-year-old was recently named Premier League Manager of the Month for September.

The Blues sit fourth with 14 points from a possible 21 and haven’t lost in the league since their opening day defeat to Manchester City.

Chelsea have a 100% record away from home and in a short space of time Maresca has already been able to implement a clear identity and style of play, with the players clearly buying into his ideas.

Maresca was certainly a surprise appointment but in a rare interview Winstanley said the Italian was somebody the sporting directors admired and were keen to bring to the club.

“Enzo [Maresca] was somebody we admired and were keen to bring here,” he told The Telegraph.

“We absolutely see him here for the long term, that’s definitely how we see it. He’s got the personality to manage this club and coach this team.”

In a wide ranging interview Winstanley and Stewart also spoke about how all decisions they have taken have been performance based rather than PSR based.

Chelsea desperately need some continuity at the club after so much upheaval over the past couple of years and whatever happens Maresca needs to be given the time to carry out the job he was employed to do.

The Blues absolutely need to get back into the Champions League and their start to the season has shown they are capable of that, but they now face a tough run of matches with Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester United and Arsenal their next four league games.
