Chelsea pulled off a sensational 3–0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s FIFA Club World Cup final and it was Cole Palmer who stole the headlines with a performance that underlined his growing reputation on the world stage.
The 22-year-old was at the heart of everything at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, scoring twice in the space of eight minutes during the first half before setting up João Pedro for the third.
It was a ruthless spell of attacking football that left PSG shell-shocked and effectively ended the contest before the break.
Palmer’s brace - two well-taken goals with near-identical precision - didn’t just put Chelsea on course for their second Club World Cup crown (the first since 2021); it also earned him the Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament’s best player.
He joined a very short list of English players to have found the net in a Club World Cup final - a group that includes Phil Foden and Wayne Rooney, and now, Cole Palmer.
His goals also etched his name into the record books. Palmer became the first Englishman to score a brace in a Club World Cup final, and his eight-minute double is now the quickest by an English player in an international final since Alan Sealey’s famous two-minute brace for West Ham in the 1965 Cup Winners’ Cup.
