Racism took centre stage yet again in a La Liga match when Real Madrid locked horns with Real Oviedo at Estadio Carlos Tartiere.

In what was supposed to a routine La Liga contest between a newly-promoted side and one of the biggest teams in Europe, the game got ugly during the final stages when Vinicius Jr. was booed by Oviedo fans.

The home fans did not only boo the Brazilian and also hurled racist abuse at the Real Madrid superstar as well as his teammate Kylian Mbappe, targeting the duo with m*nkey noises.

In fact, former Barcelona youth prodigy Keita Balde Diao even claimed that throwing racist chants at Vinicius has shamelessly become a trend in many cities across Spain, including Barcelona.

Real Oviedo president vows to investigate

In light of the incident, Real Oviedo president, Martin Pelaez has vowed to investigate the matter ‘until the very end’ while defending the home fans, in the process.

“Given the noise that is being generated, I would like to say that this institution is against any act of racism and that we are already investigating what happened with the security of the club and the police,” he said (h/t SPORT).

“If we find any evidence that it happened, we are going to punish it because we cannot tolerate it.”

The president added that Oviedo fans have been spectacular over the past few seasons and do not deserve to be defamed for what he calls an isolated incident.

It does not deserve to be isolated for something that we still do not know if it happened: if we find the evidence, Oviedo will punish it,” he said.

Pelaez went on to heap praise on the Oviedo fans, concluding, “Our fans always beat all fan records. They take the medals and we want it to continue like this, because the Tartiere has to be strong.”
