Tomorrow evening, Tottenham Hotspur take to the field when they face Rangers on the road, for match day six of their UEFA Europa League campaign.
Domestically, it has been a season to forget for Rangers, already sitting 11 points behind arch rivals Celtic after 15 games in the SPFL, with just 32 points from their 15 games to date.
However in Europe, it has been a different story. Phillipe Clement’s side have picked up 10 points from their five games so far, elevating them above Spurs on goal difference, as they occupy the final automatic qualification birth.
Last time out in this competition, Rangers pulled off an impressive 4-1 win over Nice in France. In their two home games so far, they have lost 4-1 to Lyon, and won 4-0 against Romanian side FCSB, so pretty mixed levels of success.
Striker Hamza Igamane scored twice, and provided a further assist in the win over Nice. Winger Vàclav Ćernŷ also scored in that game, and has three goals in the competition so far. Ange’s side will have to be particularly wary of both players.
Spurs fans may remember nine time England international Jack Butland from his time at Stoke in the Premier League. He made six saves in the win over Nice, and was part of the side who made the knockout stages last season.
We can be sure Ange will get the usual hostile reception, after his two years at Celtic between 2021-2023, where he beat Rangers to the league twice, the Scottish league cup twice, and the Scottish cup once.
Furthermore, Fraser Forster spent five seasons at Celtic, during two spells between 2010-2014, and the 2019-20 season. During his second spell at the club, he saved a penalty to help Celtic beat Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish cup final. Some Spurs fans may find that pretty hard to believe.
No doubt this will be a very tough game, particularly with the depleted squad at Ange's disposal. Spurs are set to be without; Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Ben Davies, Wilson Odobert, Mikey Moore and Richarlison for this game.
Having only picked up one point from the previous two games, this is a real must win, otherwise the likelihood of having to play a two-legged play off becomes very serious.
