One German star is off the table but will Manchester City instead move for another?

With Manchester City in the process of rebuilding their squad, they will be on the lookout for players in a host of positions to build Pep Guardiola’s squad around. They do appear in need of an attacking midfielder. Two players who would be perfect to slot into City’s midfield are German internationals Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. But with Jamal Musiala having signed a contract extension with Bayern Munich could City instead move for Florian Wirtz? That could be on the cards based on a new report. But even that move appears to be unlikely.

First of all, Bayern Munich announced yesterday that Jamal Musiala has signed a contract extension with the club. Musiala’s contract extension will run until 2030. With that news now confirmed Jamal Musiala won’t be a summer target for Pep Guardiola’s side. The longer that Musiala didn’t sign a contract extension with the Bundesliga giants it did appear that he could have been a possible transfer target for Manchester City. But that possibility is now off the table. However, it does appear that another German star may be a summer target for Manchester City.

Fraser Fletcher has reported for TeamTalk that Manchester City are interested in signing Florian Wirtz next summer. Furthermore, Fletcher reports that Real Madrid are also interested in signing Wirtz. Bayern Munich are also monitoring Wirtz and would be eager to sign the German international as per Fletcher’s report.

Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala would have been dream signings for Manchester City, but with Musiala off the table, is Wirtz a realistic target?

If you drew up a list of dream signings for Manchester City Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz would be right at the top of it. But as is the case with dream signings they are generally unrealistic or unattainable. For now, Jamal Musiala falls into that category for Manchester City or any other interested suitor. His contract extension with Bayern Munich eliminates him from City’s summer transfer window plans. But Florian Wirtz is a different proposition entirely as things stand currently. But is there a realistic chance for Manchester City to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star? That isn’t immediately clear at this stage. But it has been reported that he is set to sign a contract extension with Bayern Leverkusen.

Christian Falk has previously reported via X that although Manchester City are interested in signing Wirtz in the summer transfer window he is on the verge of signing a contract extension with Bayern Leverkusen. Based on that information it doesn’t seem that Wirtz is a realistic target for the world champions in the upcoming summer transfer window. As a player, Wirtz would be perfect for Pep Guardiola’s squad. Especially when you consider that Kevin De Bruyne is almost at the end of his illustrious City career. But with him seemingly on the verge of signing a lucrative contract extension with Bayern Leverkusen, it appears that the chances of City signing him next summer are slim.

Summary

Jamal Musiala is officially off of Manchester City’s summer transfer window shopping list. There is hope that City could instead move for Florian Wirtz. But that move is almost off the table as it appears that Wirtz will likely sign a new deal with his current club. Either player would have been a dream signing for Pep Guardiola’s side but it does seem that City will be looking elsewhere next summer.
