One player who isn’t afraid to speak his mind is Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese international always tells it like it is when given the opportunity. He spoke after Manchester City’s disappointing 1-nil loss to Crystal Palace in yesterday’s FA Cup final. One comment in particular from Bernardo does stand out in what has been a testing season for Pep Guardiola’s side.
In quotes relayed by Tyrone Marshall for Manchester Evening News, Bernardo Silva spoke about what he has learned this season. He revealed he now knows which teammates he can go to war with. Speaking on Manchester City’s season, he said: “You learn a lot of new things [after a difficult season]. In the bad moments, you learn new things. Who you can go to war with, first of all. Because it’s in the bad moments that you see who the real ones are. And a lot of things that were good for us to not take things for granted, for our fans, for the club. Don’t lower our standards.”
This season has been a battle for Pep Guardiola’s side. After experiencing so much success in recent seasons, Manchester City will end this season with no silverware. They are also in a battle to secure Champions League qualification for next season. That reality is well below the level expected of Pep Guardiola’s side.
But the comment from Bernardo Silva that he knows who he can go to war with does stand out. A host of Manchester City players have suffered consistent injury issues this season. Others have been well below their usual level of performance during the 24/25 campaign. Perhaps those are the players that Bernardo Silva is talking about. It does no good to speculate on names, but Bernardo, as a leader in Pep Guardiola’s squad, wouldn’t make a comment like that for no reason.
Bernardo Silva’s comments after yesterday’s match are telling. He’s put it out there that some of his teammates have let the team down this season. That comment speaks of the issues that Pep Guardiola’s squad has faced this season. Who leaves Manchester City this summer may reveal who Bernardo Silva was talking about when he spoke after City’s loss in yesterday’s FA Cup final.
