Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that they are parting ways with FC Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet following his loan spell at the club. The Lilywhites have decided against purchasing him permanently, with the centre-back now set to return to the club.

Lenglet left Barcelona for Tottenham in the summer of last year, joining them on a season-long loan deal. The French international enjoyed a fairly solid spell in England, playing regularly for the Lilywhites.

Lenglet featured 35 times across all competitions for Spurs in the 2022/23 campaign and even contributed with a goal and two assists.

It was believed that Tottenham were in talks to sign him permanently from Barcelona this summer and that the Catalans wished to finalise his departure as soon as possible in a deal worth around €10-15 million.

However, Tottenham have confirmed that they will not be signing him permanently, at least at this point, announcing that he will be back at Barcelona.

“We can confirm the departures of Arnaut Danjuma and Clement Lenglet following the conclusion of their loan spells with us. Defender Clement joined us last summer from Barcelona and made 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring once,” the official statement read.

Given Barcelona’s need to make urgent sales, they were hoping that Lenglet’s move to Tottenham would be made permanent. However, that prospect does not seem to be likely, at least for now.

Whether there are talks between the two clubs about a permanent transfer in the coming weeks remains to be seen. For now, Lenglet seems to be on his way back to Barcelona.
