Werder Bremen have announced that head coach Ole Werner will not extend his contract at the club beyond its expiry in 2026.
On Werner’s decision, Bremen director of football Clemens Fritz said:
“We deeply regret this decision because we could very well envision a long-term collaboration with Ole. We must now accept the decision and will analyze the current situation and decide what the best solution is for Werder. We will take the necessary time for this process and will communicate the result afterwards,”
Sky Germany reports that Werner and Bremen are already in discussions about a possible early separation this summer. Bremen are said to have been preparing for this situation and have already begun assessing the manager market.
Werner was appointed Bremen head coach in 2021 when the club were in the 2.Bundesliga, and was able to lead them to promotion back to the Bundesliga for the first time of asking. While in the top flight, Werner has created stability at the Weserstadion, leading them to 13th, ninth and eighth placed finishes since promotion. At one point this season, Bremen even had a chance of qualifying for the Champions League, but fell off in the latter stages of the season.
