Marco Reus has announced that he will step down as the captain of Borussia Dortmund ahead of next season.
After a campaign that promised so much for Borussia Dortmund and much-loved captain Marco Reus, it would ultimately end in the most excruciating disappointment. Three points at home to Mainz on matchday 34 would have guaranteed BVB their first league title since 2012, but a 2-2 draw meant Bayern Munich were handed their eleventh straight Meisterschale.
However, what would be even more bitter for Reus is the fact that his contribution towards the end of the season decreased rapidly. Especially on the final day against the Carnival Club, Reus would only feature for 50 minutes after Karim Adeyemi was withdrawn through injury.
The first six Bundesliga games would see Reus complete the full 90 minutes, but an injury against arch-rivals Schalke on matchday seven would prevent him from achieving this again throughout the remainder of the Bundesliga season. Sixteen goal contributions in all competitions signalled his worst return since his injury savaged 2017/18 campaign, leaving the 34-year-old captain to step back from his captaincy.
“Hello BVB fans, It is very important for me to tell you something personally. I had a lot to think about during my vacation, and I have decided to pass on the captain’s armband,” remarked Reus, before continuing: “I informed Edin Terzić and Sebastian Kehl about this yesterday. I was allowed to wear this armband for five years with pride and honour. Thank you for your support over the years. I wish Sebastian and Edin that they find a good successor. I am sure they will succeed.”
This could mark Reus’ final campaign with the Black and Yellows after signing a one-year contract extension in April, meaning that he would be free to leave in the summer of 2024. There are no current reports over who will succeed Reus, but 25-year-old Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel could be a fantastic option for Die Schwarzgelben.
