Inter Milan have released an official note on Friday confirming Stefan de Vrij has sustained a muscular injury.

The Netherlands international entered the pitch in the 63rd minute against Al-Ittihad on Wednesday’s friendly encounter, replacing Francesco Acerbi.

But sadly for the defender, his second-half cameo ended with a muscular problem. The player himself revealed he heard something tweak, much to the club’s dismay.

Simone Inzaghi and his staff have been anxiously awaiting for the test results to reveal the extent of the problem.

Unfortunately for the club, the tests detected an injury. The player has suffered a muscle strain in the left thigh.

And while the official statement didn’t offer a timetable for the recovery, it revealed that de Vrij will undergo further tests next week.

“Stefan de Vrij underwent clinical and instrumental tests this morning at the Humanitas Institute in Rozzano,” read the statement published on the club’s official website.

“The Nerazzurri defender has a muscle strain in his left thigh biceps femoris. His condition will be reassessed next week.”

This is an untimely blow for Inzaghi who is already short on personnel at the back.

With Tajon Buchanan out until December with a serious injury, Carlos Augusto will return to serve as a backup for Federico Dimarco on the left wing. This leaves Alessandro Bastoni without a genuine understudy.

And with de Vrij now missing the action, we shall see if the management will decide to act on the market.

Acerbi remains the club’s main option for the central defender. But at the age of 36, the Italian veteran might be another player whom he can rotate with.

In the meantime, we shall see for how long the Dutchman will remain on the sidelines.
