Lyon have successfully appealed their Ligue 2 relegation, according to a report from L’Equipe. Two weeks ago, Les Gones were handed an administrative demotion as the DNCG – Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion, French football’s financial regulators – opted not to overturn their Ligue 2 relegation. With their domestic and European presence on the line, as they qualified for the Europa League courtesy of their sixth-place finish in Ligue 1, Lyon appealed the DNCG’s decision.

Michele Kang – who replaced John Textor as Lyon president – and the club’s CEO, Michael Gerlinger, met the DNCG appeal committee this Wednesday in Paris. Their audition seems to have convinced the members of the committee. The latter have overturned the previous decision to send Les Gones into Ligue 2.

However, Lyon are not out of the woods just yet. The DNCG appeal committee has handed Lyon a wage bill and transfer budget restrictions. Lyon have confirmed the DNCG’s decision in a press release that reads as follows: “Olympique Lyonnais welcomes today’s decision by the DNCG to keep the Club in Ligue 1. OL thanks the Appeals Committee for recognizing the ambition of the Club’s new management, determined to ensure serious management in the future.”

The new management, supported by the commitment and dedication of our shareholders and lenders, is extremely grateful for all the support received both within and outside the Club, including from its supporters, employees, players, partners and elected officials. Today’s decision is the first step in restoring confidence in Olympique Lyonnais. We can now focus our attention on our sporting objectives and fully prepare for next season.”
