Borussia Mönchengladbach have picked up Germany U20 international Yannik Engelhardt on loan from Italy’s Serie A. The 24-year-old will receive a chance to play in the Bundesliga for the very first time in his six year career. Engelhardt played in the German fourth tier with the Werder Bremen reserves, the 3. Liga with the Freiburg reserves, and the 2. Bundesliga with Fortuna Düsseldorf.
How Engelhardt will fit into Gladbach’s crowded midfield puzzle remains to be seen. After a highly successful season spent playing for Como 1907 in the Italian top flight, it would appear that the foals have plans to make use of the €6m-valued defensive midfielder. Engelhardt moved to Como from Düsseldorf on an €8m transfer one year ago after a great 2. Bundesliga campaign.
“Yannik Engelhardt is a player whose development we have been watching for a long time,” BMG sporting director Roland Virkus noted in a club statement. “With his profile, he covers almost all positions in defense. The opportunity to loan him for a year arose at short notice. We are very pleased that he has chosen Borussia.“
”I’ve dreamed of playing in the Bundesliga since I was a little boy,” the player himself added. “I am very happy to be able to realize this dream now at Borussia. Borussia is a big club with a lot of momentum, a large fan base, and a great stadium. The decision was really easy for me.”
