Official: Atalanta vs Como called off after torrential rain in Bergamo | OneFootball

Monday night’s Serie A match between Atalanta and Como at the Gewiss Stadium has been called off after the third round of pitch inspections, due to continuous, torrential rain in the Bergamo region, leading to a completely waterlogged pitch.

The game had been scheduled to kick off at 19.45 BST, but was delayed by half an hour while the ground staff made attempts to clear the playing surface.

A second inspection was scheduled half an hour after the originally scheduled kick-off time at 20.15 BST. Referee Paride Tremolada deemed it safe to play at the time, and pushed kick-off back until 20.45.

Approaching the re-scheduled kick-off time, the rain had not stopped falling, and the pitch had once again become unsafe to play on.

There had been several continuous hours of torrential rain in the Bergamo area, which did not let up in time for kick-off.

The rain continued to pour down while the Gewiss Stadium staff attempted to make the pitch playable. While that was happening, the players were instructed to head back into the dressing rooms.

Several first-team players hung around the tunnel waiting to hear about the latest updates.

Como had been particularly keen to get the game on, as they are still searching for their first victory in Serie A, after one draw and three losses after their promotion from Serie B.

The fixture between Atalanta and Como will, of course, have to be played out in full at a later date. Updates on the date and time of the rearranged fixture will be provided in due course.
