Nuno Espirito Santo has explained why Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed the pitch to remonstrate with the manager on Sunday.

The Tricky Trees were held to a 2-2 draw by Midlands rivals Leicester City, who were already relegated before the game, at the City Ground.

Frustration boiled over at the final whistle when Marinakis entered the field of play and angrily confronted Nuno, to the consternation of many watching on.

While the result was a major blow to Forest‘s hopes of finishing in the top five and qualifying for the Champions League, it did guarantee they will play in Europe next season.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Nuno revealed that the altercation was due to the situation surrounding Taiwo Awoniyi late on in the match.

The striker smashed into the upright when trying to get on the end of a low cross, requiring treatment. The nasty collision did not deter him from continuing on, but he was unable to contribute as he hobbled about. To compound matters, Forest ran out of substitution blocks when Elliot Anderson was replaced by Jota Silva shortly after the incident.

“It was due to the situation. There was a confusion over the situation of [Awoniyi],” Nuno admitted.

“There was frustration to play 10 minutes with a player that had so much confidence and being positive that he’s going to score.

“We made the sub, then played with one man less. That causes frustration, it’s obvious.

“When there’s a player down, you get information about them. We got information he was okay to keep going so we made a sub.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have another stoppage to change him, and he was not able to continue to help the team.

“We’re all frustrated. We felt the Leicester goal was not in the flow of the game, but we tried to then go for the winner.”

Nuno added: “Football, football is emotions. It’s difficult to control, especially when we had so much expectation today.

“The fans were incredible, we wanted to proceed the fight. It’s not in our hands now, we appreciate the effort of the players and enthusiasm of the fans.

“It’s not in our hands, but it’s not over.”
