Darren Huckerby's recent tweet will certainly make Norwich City fans happy
Darren Huckerby's time at Norwich City may have come towards the end of his career, but his time at Carrow Road is fondly remembered both by Canaries fans and Huckerby himself.
The former Coventry City, Leeds United and Manchester City frontman made more appearances for Norwich than he did for any other club in his career. He helped them end a nine-year spell in the second tier in his first season by scoring 14 en route to Premier League promotion, and then spent a further four campaigns at Carrow Road.
Norwich was his final English club. He spent a couple of years in the MLS for the San Jose Earthquakes before he eventually retired, but he did have options to continue his career in the EFL, namely with the Canaries' arch rivals, Ipswich Town.
That is, according to a tweet Huckerby sent out in response to one user on X. But the prolific striker was never going to go against his Norwich allegiance and wear the Ipswich shirt.
Huckerby took to X to have his say on Marcelino Nunez's then-reported transfer from Norwich to Ipswich, the first transfer between the two clubs since 2001.
The 49-year-old didn't shy away from showing his disgust at the report, branding it an "April fool."
One user, an Ipswich fan, then replied to the former striker, saying that he'd have jumped ship too if the Tractor Boys came in with an offer, but he "was never good enough to get the call."
Huckerby was quick to reply and was happy to take a small dig at Norwich's East Anglian rivals, too.
He said: "Again I was contacted by Ipswich when my contract finished at Norwich, I was better than every single player in your squad at the time, I told them I'd rather retire!"
Huckerby chose to cross the Atlantic and play in America following his time at Carrow Road, seemingly declining the offers of some EFL clubs to bring the then-32-year-old to their club.
The striker was happy to end his playing time in England with Norwich, and Canaries fans will be happy that he declined the chance to go and play for Ipswich.
Darren Huckerby's reaction to a current Norwich player making the switch to Ipswich tells you all you need to know about the rivalry between the two clubs. The fact that the 49-year-old would rather have stopped playing than play for the Tractor Boys emphasises that further.
Nunez is a quality Championship midfielder, someone who Canaries fans didn't want to see leave, especially to a divisional rival, and even more so to Kieran McKenna's side.
John Percy reported that the 25-year-old "pushed" for the transfer to happen, too, indicating that he feels Ipswich is a step-up in his career, which would be a huge insult to Norwich fans.
The Chilean will have to wait until April to return to Carrow Road, and you'd expect the reception to be frosty at best for him.
