Football fans think Lionel Messi refused Neymar’s request to take a penalty during Paris Saint-Germain’s exhibition match against Riyadh All-Star XI.
The two superstars started the match in attack alongside Kylian Mbappe and played just over an hour of the contest at the King Fahd International Stadium in Saudi Arabia.
The Riyadh All-Star XI was made up of players from Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo’s new club.
Messi put PSG 1-0 up after just three minutes before Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot later in the first half.
For a brief moment it felt like we were back in the mid-2010s, when these two legendary figures would compete with each out week-in week-out in La Liga and the Champions League.
Marquinhos put PSG back in front in the 43rd minute before Ronaldo levelled the scores with his second of the night before half-time.
Neither Messi nor Ronaldo managed to get on the scoresheet in the second half but five more goals were netted as PSG ran out 5-4 winners.
PSG would have gone into half-time with the lead if Neymar had scored a penalty in first-half stoppage-time.
The Brazilian had the opportunity to put PSG 3-1 up but fluffed his lines with one of the most unconvincing spot-kicks we’ll see all season.
Football fans on social media noticed that Neymar appeared to offer the penalty to Messi, who refused. The Argentine wanted his teammate to get on the scoresheet instead, trusting his fellow South American to get the job done from 12 yards.
Let’s check out some of the reaction:
But the 35-year-old – who, to be fair, has missed more than his fair share of penalties throughout his illustrious career – must wish he’d taken it himself after watching Neymar’s effort.
Neymar is known for his ice-cold penalties, waiting for the goalkeeper to move first before rolling the ball past his opponent.
But Saudi Arabia international Mohammed Al-Owais refused to budge and ended up making a comfortable save from Neymar’s surprisingly tame effort.

That’s a shocker.
Neymar, Messi, Mbappe and Ronaldo were all subbed off around the hour-mark.
Despite the fact his side lost 5-4, it was Ronaldo who received the Man of the Match award after the final whistle.
