News on Monday morning that the Newcastle United squad are heading to Austria.
The players arriving back for pre-season preparation today and The Mail reporting details of their plans.
They report that the plan is for the Newcastle United players to go for a pre-season training camp in Austria, ahead of travelling to Singapore and South Korea later this month.
The first pre-season friendly is at Celtic on Saturday 19 July, then the second one is against Arsenal eight days later in Singapore.
You would imagine that United will be flying to Singapore a fair few days before the Arsenal match, so I’m assuming the training camp in Austria will be ahead of the friendly in Glasgow in 12 days time.
The Mail also report that their information is that Joelinton is fit and set to join in pre-season training from the start, the Brazil international having missed the end of last season due to injury issues. Late last month we reported (see below) on Joelinton training back at his first ever club, Sport Recife, to help with his fitness ahead of official pre-season.
Indeed, The Mail say that apart from Lewis Hall who will for the time being be working on his own away from the main group, they understand that all players back at the training ground are fit and ready to train. Hall has been working at the training ground this summer as he recovers from surgery, though is expected to be back training with the group in the not so distant future and should be ok for when the season kicks off at Villa on Saturday 16 August, in 40 days time.
Some of the Newcastle United squad have been given a little extra time off after having been involved in international football this summer. Though I take it the plan will be for them to be back in time and on the plane to Austria, getting the whole squad back together and working as one group towards the new season.
Plus of course with the addition of one or two new signings in the near future…
Reports elsewhere claim that John Ruddy has agreed a new short-term deal, believed to be for a further year, so he will be part of the group training from the start of pre-season.
The Mag report – 26 June 2025:
Joelinton was a key player in Newcastle United’s success across the 2024/25 season.
The Brazil international starting six of the seven Carabao Cup matches, including of course playing in the final as United won silverware.
The same impact in the Premier League, Joelinton starting 29 of the opening 33 Premier League matches as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.
However, a knee injury curtailed the midfielder’s season, as he missed the final five league games, including the final four when United picked up only four points from a possible twelve and eventually stumbled over the Champions League qualifying line.
The hope of course that by cutting last season short and preventing any further damage to his knee, Joelinton would then be able to recover fully and be fit and ready for this massive 2025/26 Newcastle United season.
In advance of the player’s return to Tyneside to begin official pre-season, we have had an update on Joelinton from Brazil.
Joelinton has been back at his old club Sport Recife, which is an hour’s drive away from the family home where he grew up.
The Newcastle United has been doing pre-season training, keeping his fitness levels up, ahead of returning to Tyneside.
“Whenever I’m on vacation, I come and train here at the Club [Sport Recife].
“This has happened every season and it has brought me luck.
“I’m very happy to be back home, a place I have a lot of affection for.”
Joelinton also spoke about how good it felt when he won the Carabao Cup with Newcastle United, to then see the messages from fans of Sport Recife, the player’s first club:
“I saw all the messages and I was very happy.
“I am very grateful to all the fans who took the time to congratulate me.
“I feel very proud to carry the name of Pernambuco [the region/state] and to represent Sport abroad.
“The fans’ affection is the same.
“I always wish the best for the Club.
“Sport is going through a difficult time but I hope everyone stays together. I want to wish all the luck in the world to Daniel Paulista and the entire group.”
TV Sport have also published this clip of Joelinton training at Sport Recife and showing behind the scenes:
Joelinton is a massive player for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United, when he is playing in a midfield trio wit Bruno and Sandro Tonali, all things are possible.
