As Newcastle United fans, we have come to expect a daily, even hourly, update on the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool set to take away our best players.
It is relentless, journalists and pundits constantly talking as if it is inevitable.
That the best Newcastle United players will indeed end up surely signing for Premier League rivals such as Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Pretty much all of the speculation is based on basically nothing, just the usual media wanting to write negative Newcastle United stories/headlines, whilst at the same time putting out positive ones for their favoured usual suspects.
Now on Tuesday, a media exclusive that goes against the tide.
Craig Hope of The Mail is one of the most reliable when it comes to breaking NUFC stories and he has another one today.
He says that his information is that Newcastle United will NOT allow their best players to leave this summer.
He says that is the case whether or not United qualify for the Champions League this season.
That even if any of Newcastle’s best players wanted to leave, they wouldn’t be allowed to move on to the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea, or indeed any other club.
The man from The Mail pointing out that as the club have all of their key/best players on long-term contracts (see below), there is zero pressure on them from that angle.
The lame media stories almost always reference PSR as a key reason why one or more of the best Newcastle United stars will move on in this next window. However, this is total nonsense.
As Hope points out, Newcastle United are now back in a strong PSR position. After the serious essential investment in the squad in the early windows after the takeover, these last three transfer windows have seen United bring in no big first team contenders, whilst at the same time having to sell young promising players Minteh and Anderson for a combined £68m, then making the PSR position even more advantageous ahead of July (the current financial year ends for NUFC on 30 June 2025) we have seen £31m of outgoing deals in January as Almiron and Kelly left.
The Mail report says that whilst both fans and the best players have been left disappointed with these last three transfer windows and lack of off-field on a brand new stadium and stadium ground, things are about to change across the board.
Announcements are due on off-field projects, especially the much bigger capacity stadium one.
Whilst as Eddie Howe had said, the club have had to experience some ‘short-term pain for long-term gain’ when it comes to the transfer market, with this summer set to see concrete proof of renewed ambition, via new signings.
The message from the Newcastle United hierarchy is that the intention is to keep all of the club’s best players AND add to them this summer, rather than this tired repetitive media narrative that NUFC’s best players will shortly join rival clubs.
How the Newcastle United contracts situation now looks (via official club releases and media reports), when current deals are up:
End of June 2025:
Dubravka, Schar, Wilson, Lascelles, Krafth, Gillespie, Ruddy, Lewis
End of June 2026:
Burn, Targett, Pope, Longstaff, Ashby, Hayden, Trippier
End of June 2027:
Botman, Jacob Murphy, Willock
End of June 2028:
End of June 2029:
