Sean Longstaff had picked up two bookings against Chelsea and AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup, meaning a one-match suspension in that competition.

So what about cards given in Premier League matches?

Well today against Leicester in that 4-0 hammering, it would have only been a red card for any Newcastle United player, that would have seen them join Sean Longstaff in missing the Brentford cup game.

However, three bookings today and it means one Newcastle United player is suspended for Ipswich next Saturday.

Bruno moves on to three Premier League yellow cards and Murphy goes to two, however, Joelinton is now on five.

The referee very harsh in booking Joelinton for a nothing kind of foul and that means he misses the Ipswich away game (Premier League red cards mean a ban in any upcoming match(es), league or cup, yellow cards in league matches though are only applicable to the Premier League – unless you get two in the same match!).

After 16 Newcastle United matches in the Premier League this season, here is the situation with PL yellow cards..

The 2023/24 Premier League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:

5 Burn, Joelinton

4 Schar, Tonali

3 Hall, Bruno

2 Longstaff, Kelly, Pope, Willock, Jacob Murphy

1 Wilson, Gordon

With yellow cards in Premier League matches, you get a one match ban for reaching five bookings inside the first 19 Premier League matches.

Dan Burn has already missed the West Ham match due to picking up five yellows in the Premier League.

Schar and Tonali now have to get through these next three PL games without a booking, or else they will get the same. As will any other Newcastle United player, who doesn’t get to the end of the Man U away match (19th PL game of the season for Newcastle) on 30 December 2024, without picking up five PL yellows.

Looking beyond this halfway point and not picking up five bookings, you will then have Newcastle United players who end up with 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches, up to and including their team’s 32nd fixture, will serve a two match suspension in the competition.

You then end up with a three game suspension if you manage to pick up 15 yellow cards in a Premier League season.
