One Newcastle United player is already banned for the Brentford cup match.
So could others follow?
I have seen some debate around this on social media, worries that cards picked up in the next Premier League match (Leicester home) could impact on that cup match in seven days time.
Sean Longstaff is the Newcastle United player who definitely misses the cup quarter-final. The two bookings he picked up against Chelsea and AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup, means a one-match suspension in that competition.
So what about cards given in Premier League matches?
After 15 Newcastle United matches in the Premier League this season, here is the situation with PL yellow cards..
The 2023/24 Premier League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:
5 Burn
4 Schar, Tonali, Joelinton
3 Hall
2 Longstaff, Bruno, Kelly, Pope, Willock
1 Wilson, Gordon, Jacob Murphy
With yellow cards in Premier League matches, you get a one match ban for reaching five bookings inside the first 19 Premier League matches.
You only get banned for the next Premier League match though in this case, it wouldn’t apply to a Carabao Cup or FA Cup match.
So if say Schar, Tonali or Joelinton picked up a fifth PL yellow card against Leicester on Saturday, they would miss the Ipswich PL game, not the Brentford cup one.
(One small positive on Saturday at Brentford, was that none of that trio picked up a fifth yellow card, indeed not a single Newcastle United player got a booking).
However, red cards are different…
If though, a Newcastle United player got a red card against Leicester this weekend, they would miss Brentford in the cup. As you will no doubt recall, Nick Pope got sent off against Liverpool in the Premier League and picked up a one game suspension, something which potentially cost NUFC their first silverware ‘in a while’, as he missed the Carabao Cup at Wembley.
So bottom line is that yellow cards in Premier League matches have no relevance to Cup matches BUT red cards most definitely do!
Dan Burn has already missed the West Ham match due to picking up five yellows in the Premier League.
Schar, Tonali and Joelinton have to get through these next four PL games without a booking, or else they will get the same. As will any other Newcastle United player, who doesn’t get to the end of the Man U away match (19th PL game of the season for Newcastle) on 30 December 2024, without picking up five PL yellows.
Looking beyond this halfway point and not picking up five bookings, you will then have Newcastle United players who end up with 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches, up to and including their team’s 32nd fixture, will serve a two match suspension in the competition.
You then end up with a three game suspension if you manage to pick up 15 yellow cards in a Premier League season.
