Newcastle United clicked into top gear to thrash Leicester City 4-0 at St James’ Park to end their winless run of four successive games in the Premier League today.
The comprehensive win further extended the Magpies’ fine record against promoted teams, having tasted just one defeat in the last 22 meetings.
Newcastle started well, with Anthony Gordon testing Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen early on. Dan Burn missed narrowly from the resulting corner.
Constant Newcastle pressure was rewarded in the 30th minute when Gordon found Jacob Murphy, who coolly slotted home through a crowded penalty area to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Alexander Isak missed the opportunity to make it a two-goal lead before the break, but Newcastle started the second half strongly.
Bruno Guimarães made it 2-0 just two minutes after the restart as he headed home at the back post from a clever set-piece engineered by Lewis Hall.
Moments later, a deflected cross from Hall fell to Isak, who tapped in as Newcastle trebled their advantage.
Isak was again instrumental in the fourth goal, producing a brilliant solo run down the left before setting up Murphy to notch a composed finish in the 60th minute.
The Magpies remained dominant without pressing for more, but their four goals emphatically underpinned their supremacy.
The win propels Eddie Howe’s side to 11th place in the Premier League table. Meanwhile, Leicester City’s struggles on the road persist, with only one win from eight away matches this season.
The defeat drops Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team to 16th place, just two points above the relegation zone. They face a battle to be consistent under their new manager.
