Newcastle United are working behind the scenes to make a major defensive signing. And they have turned their attention to one of Germany’s finest.

According to Sky Sports Deutschland journalist Patrick Berger, the Magpies have held a video call with Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck. The Bundesliga defender is now firmly on Newcastle’s radar ahead of a potential move to Tyneside.

Schlotterbeck, 24, has become a key figure at Dortmund since joining in 2022. He has made 124 appearances for the club and also has 20 caps for the German national team. Known for his physicality, passing, and composure, he fits the profile of what Newcastle need at the back.

Newcastle targeting Nico Schlotterbeck to strengthen defence

The timing of the approach is significant. Newcastle are set to lose several defenders soon – Jamaal Lascelles is out of contract this summer, while Dan Burn, Fabian Schar, and Emil Krafth could all leave when their deals expire in 2026. That has left the club looking to sign a younger partner for Sven Botman.

The video call with Schlotterbeck reportedly took place before he picked up a serious knee injury earlier this month, which could keep him sidelined until the end of the year. While that complicates any move this summer, it could also give Newcastle an edge.

Dortmund are aware of Newcastle’s interest, and although Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool have also tracked him in the past, the injury may cause others to pause. That could allow the Magpies to steal a march in the race.

Schlotterbeck is under contract at Dortmund until 2027. The German club reportedly want to make him one of their highest earners. But as of now, there is no agreement on a new deal, and Newcastle could capitalise if negotiations stall.
