Newcastle United have opened talks with Burnley over a move for goalkeeper James Trafford, according to the Telegraph.
The Magpies have been pleased with the efforts of Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka over the years.
However, they now want to add a younger and more agile option to strengthen the squad.
Trafford stood out in the Championship last season, helping Burnley secure promotion back to the Premier League.
The 22-year-old was named in the Championship Team of the Season after an impressive run of displays.
He also won the Golden Glove award after keeping the most clean sheets in the second tier.
Newcastle have made a formal offer of £30 million for Trafford. However, Burnley have placed a value of £40m and will not negotiate.
Chelsea have reportedly been monitoring Trafford for over a year and could rival Newcastle in the race to secure his services.
Newcastle, who need to sign a central defender and a forward this summer, are being careful with their budget.
They are currently unwilling to go above £30 million due to financial planning concerns. Newcastle have made it clear they will walk away if Burnley do not adjust their price.
Trafford is rated as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe and was close to joining Newcastle last summer.
However, that move collapsed due to fears of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.
The Magpies hope to reach an agreement soon without breaching spending limits. Negotiations are still active, and a deal could be completed in the next few days.
