Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is facing an uncertain future at the club as their relegation from the Premier League beckons.
Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly facing an uncertain future at the King Power Stadium ahead of the club's expected return to the Championship next season.
That's according to Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett, who claims that van Nistelrooy's future at Leicester is "up in the air", with both sides thought to be unsure about whether he should remain in charge next term.
Van Nistelrooy took over as Foxes manager in November following the harsh sacking of Steve Cooper, with his arrival coming just weeks after the end of his successful interim spell at Manchester United, during which he beat his new employers twice in league and cup.
Leicester were one point clear of the relegation zone in the Premier League at the time of van Nistelrooy's appointment, and that gap increased further after he picked up four points from his first two games in charge, but a horror run of 15 defeats in 16 league games followed to plunge his side back into danger.
The Foxes ended their eight-game losing run with a 2-2 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, but relegation to the Championship still looks inevitable, with the club currently sitting 17 points from safety with just six matches remaining.
Van Nistelrooy has come in for plenty of criticism from Leicester supporters during his side's dismal recent run of form, but speaking about his future in February, he insisted that he was fully aware of the challenge he faced at the King Power Stadium and remained committed to the club for the long-term.
"I know what contract I signed and it wasn't a contract for five months. It was, after this, [for] two more seasons. I was aware when I arrived what the challenge was and how difficult it could be. I was aware and committed to the future," van Nistelrooy told the BBC.
"I called it a mountain to climb [after Brentford] but life is about climbing mountains and mountains are there to be climbed. That challenge I take. We will keep climbing and we drop sometimes - we slip sometimes - on the mountain but we get up and start again."
However, that has done little to stop speculation over van Nistelrooy's future, and earlier this month, it was claimed that Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is on the Foxes' radar as they weigh up whether to make a change in the summer.
In the latest update on van Nistelrooy's position, Dorsett revealed that he held discussions with the Leicester hierarchy after the 3-0 home defeat to Newcastle United last Monday night, but it was decided that the Dutchman would continue in his role for now.
It seems there is still a chance that van Nistelrooy could remain in charge at the King Power Stadium next season, but according to Dorsett, much will depend on how his side finish the season in the Premier League.
It was always going to be difficult for van Nistelrooy to keep Leicester in the Premier League given the lack of quality in the squad, but their form under him has been incredibly alarming.
The Foxes have not picked up a win since their 2-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur in late January, and prior to Saturday's draw at Brighton, they had lost eight consecutive league games without even scoring a goal, so van Nistelrooy is arguably fortunate to still be in a job.
In truth, there is little to suggest that van Nistelrooy would be a success in the Championship, so it would be a huge risk for Leicester to stick with him next season, and the recent links with Rohl would indicate that they are actively considering replacements.
