New Arsenal Striker to wear iconic shirt number as medical confirmed

Arsenal have reached a full agreement for the transfer of Sporting’s Viktor Gyökeres, with a medical and shirt number confirmed. After reaching an agreement in principle in the middle of July, negotiations stalled over the add-on structure, but as we approach the new month, Gyökeres is now expected to be an Arsenal player.

In a very complicated transfer market, the Sweden international was not the club’s initial priority. That said, the Gunners turned their attention to the player after failing to lure Benjamin Šeško to north London. This should take nothing away from the former Coventry man. He is an excellent addition to the squad and is capable of firing Arsenal to Premier League and Champions League glory.

Deal details revealed by The Athletic

As reported by The Athletic, Arsenal have reached a total agreement with Sporting. The club will pay a base fee of €63.5 million, with an additional €10 million in performance-related add-ons. €5 million of those will be tied to a set number of appearances, while the rest will depend on goal involvement and the team qualifying for the Champions League.

A medical has been pencilled in for this weekend, as the player will most likely join the club’s pre-season tour of Asia. The report also confirmed that Gyökeres will wear the number 14 shirt – a number made iconic by Thierry Henry and most recently worn by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Eddie Nketiah. The shirt became vacant following Nketiah’s departure to Crystal Palace in 2024.

The arrival of Gyökeres will hopefully usher in a trophy-laden era for the Gunners. After consecutive seasons without major silverware, Arsenal have now finally landed a conventional centre-forward.

The sky will hopefully be the limit for Arsenal’s new number 14.
