The situation surrounding Marc-Andre ter Stegen and the signing of Joan Garcia has become the central talking point at Barcelona in recent weeks.

As has been reported, the club, along with Hansi Flick, appears committed to a new goalkeeping duo: Garcia as the first choice, with Wojciech Szczesny as backup. This plan effectively leaves Ter Stegen out of the equation.

While the German goalkeeper believes he is still capable of competing for his place, the club aims to move on from him this summer.

Amidst all this, Ter Stegen joined up with the German national team for the UEFA Nations League.

Nagelsmann speaks out

And, following Germany’s loss to France in the third-playoff place game, the national team manager, Julian Nagelsmann, addressed the issue surrounding Ter Stegen – his first-choice goalkeeper.

While he insisted that the veteran star should remain calm, he also called on Barcelona and Hansi Flick to be transparent about the goalkeeper’s situation.

“Yes, of course, it’s very difficult to assess, because I only hear about all this through the media and I don’t know how much of it is true or not. You never know what the media writes, what is true and what is not,” Nagelsmann said, calling for clarity.

“Even so, I would of course like, because of the past of certain individuals and their frequent involvement with the national team, to receive some information about how all this is going to continue.”

Nagelsmann acknowledged the emotional toll such a situation can take on any player, as he said:

“I think that’s a very human thing, that all this affects you, when you constantly read and hear things about yourself and then you don’t really get information about what’s going to happen.”

Even so, Nagelsmann reaffirmed that Ter Stegen should stay calm, as he is under contract with Barcelona until 2028.

“If you look at it objectively, he has a contract and he is an exceptionally good goalkeeper, he has proved that to everyone. That’s why he can face the situation with relative peace of mind.”

Lastly, Nagelsmann emphasised that wherever Ter Stegen ends up, he should not worry – his quality will shine through.

“I don’t think he has to worry too much about his sporting future, wherever he is,” the Germany manager concluded.
