Mohamed Salah: Liverpool’s Relentless Force

Liverpool’s charge at the top of the Premier League table has been driven by a relentless attack, and at the heart of it all stands Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward is in the midst of a staggering season, setting records and proving, yet again, why he is among the greatest to ever wear the famous red shirt.

On the Daily Red podcast, hosted by Dave Hendrick for Anfield Index, Salah’s incredible consistency and sheer dominance were front and centre of the discussion. With numbers that are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in English football, Hendrick painted a picture of a player whose brilliance simply cannot be ignored.

Record-Breaking Numbers

Salah’s influence on Liverpool’s season is nothing short of historic. As of now, he has amassed 27 goals and 17 assists in the league – “obscene” numbers, as Hendrick rightly put it. That puts him just three goals and three assists away from becoming the first player in Premier League history to record a 30-goal, 20-assist season.

“He’s one goal contribution shy of [Thierry] Henry’s famous 20 and 20 season,” Hendrick pointed out, adding that Henry had 45 goal contributions that year, while Salah already has 44 with nine league games still to play.

The Premier League’s all-time record for goal contributions in a single season is held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole with 47, but as Hendrick noted, “they played in a 42-game season.” Salah, meanwhile, is well on track to surpass that total in just 38 games.

“If he gets to 30 and 20, you’re talking 50 goal contributions in a 38-game season,” Hendrick said. “That’s just a staggering amount.”

Unmatched Consistency

Unlike other top forwards in the league, Salah has delivered across every competition, every week. While some attackers have flashes of brilliance, Salah’s output has been remarkably consistent.

“He’s never gone more than two games without a goal,” Hendrick stated. His longest goal drought in the league was just two matches – against Nottingham Forest and Brentford. Even then, Salah still managed to provide an assist.

“This isn’t streaky form,” Hendrick added. “It’s game after game after game.”

This extends to the Champions League as well. Across all competitions, he has 44 goal contributions in league football alone, which Hendrick compared to the total output of Barcelona’s Raphinha in all competitions.

“There are people trying to claim Raphinha should be ahead of him in the Ballon d’Or,” Hendrick scoffed. “Based on what?”

The Mentality of a Legend

At 32, Salah is showing no signs of slowing down. “He’s already passed Cristiano [Ronaldo] for goal contributions in his age 32 season,” Hendrick pointed out. And with at least 11 games still to play, that total is only going to rise.

“He’s got 54 goal contributions this year,” Hendrick continued, “and he might have 16 games left.”

The drive to break records is evident. Hendrick suggested that Salah will be determined to reach 30 goals and 20 assists, meaning Liverpool’s title charge will continue to be fuelled by his relentless ambition.

“Mo being Mo, he’ll want to play in all of them,” Hendrick said. “He’s going to play every European Cup game we have and the Cup final.” Even if Liverpool wrap up the league title early, don’t expect Salah to take a break. “He won’t take time off if he hasn’t passed Shearer and Cole. If he doesn’t get to the 20 assists, I don’t see him being willing to sit out.”

Legacy Cemented

Salah’s numbers this season are nothing short of legendary. Hendrick summed it up simply: “What Mo is putting up this season is career stats for some players. And he’s making it look normal at age 32.”

For Liverpool fans, watching Salah in this form is a privilege. The team may be marching toward another league title, but for Salah, the personal milestones are just as important. If he keeps this up, we could be witnessing the greatest individual season in Premier League history.
