Milan Close to Completing Stunning Modric Deal After Real Madrid Exit

Midfield maestro set for San Siro swansong

Milan are poised to complete a deal that few would have predicted at the start of the summer. As reported by Football Italia, the Rossoneri are on the verge of signing Luka Modric following his departure from Real Madrid after 13 illustrious years.

The Croatian midfielder, who turns 40 in September, has reportedly given his approval to the move, with Milan confident of finalising terms by Wednesday, June 4. Modric will become a free agent once Madrid conclude their involvement in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, bringing an extraordinary spell in the Spanish capital to an end.

Sentiment meets strategy

Modric’s admiration for Milan is well documented, and his desire to play at San Siro before retirement adds emotional weight to the deal. The move is being spearheaded by new sporting director Igli Tare, with incoming head coach Massimiliano Allegri also reportedly keen to work with the former Ballon d’Or winner.

Trophy-laden career brings elite pedigree

Modric’s honours list reads like a footballer’s fantasy: six Champions League titles, four LaLiga crowns, a host of domestic and international trophies, and a reputation as one of the game’s most elegant midfielders. His CV also includes standout spells at Tottenham Hotspur and Dinamo Zagreb.

Whether this move is primarily about leadership, legacy or tactical influence, it’s clear that Milan are betting on more than just nostalgia.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For many Milan fans, the name Luka Modric still conjures awe. But this latest development also invites a healthy dose of scepticism. Signing a player who is nearing 40 is not standard practice for clubs aiming to return to Europe’s summit. While Modric’s experience and class are beyond question, the demands of Serie A are changing, and the pace of the modern game cannot be overlooked.

There is, of course, a case to be made. Modric is not a player who relied on physicality. His intelligence, positional awareness and passing range remain sharp. But is this a forward-thinking decision or a nod to sentimentality?

The hope must be that Modric is coming not as a central figure to be leaned on every week, but as a seasoned mentor, a calming presence in big games and a bridge for younger midfielders learning their trade. Milan have invested heavily in youth recently, and if Modric’s arrival is part of that bigger picture, it may yet prove wise.

But supporters will rightly ask: are Milan building for the future, or indulging the past?
