On Monday, Sky Sports reported (see below) that Newcastle United and Atlanta United had reached agreement on an £11m deal for Miguel Almiron.

An £8m transfer fee plus then £3m future add-ons.

Keith Downie of Sky Sports, said that Miguel Almiron was expected to quickly finalise personal terms and the paperwork then signed off, the player would then take his medical.

Now over in his native Paraguay, the media have reported that Miggy has taken his medical and passed it.

Versus reporting that Miguel Almiron is now expected to arrive shortly in the United States.

Daniel Campos is the agent of Miguel Almiron and in an interview with Tigo Sports and he explained exactly why Miggy was returning to his former club, including getting a four year contract:

“It is a big step because he ][Miguel Almiron] had some very good moments there [at Atlanta United previously].

“It is a very organised club, people idolise him, he got a long-term contract, which is what he was looking for.

“They are putting together a competitive team.”

A four year contact would take Miguel Almiron up to just days before his thirty fifth birthday (in February 2029), so you can see why the player would be happy with that.

As for a formal announcement of the transfer.

This Friday will mark exactly six years since Rafa Benitez signed Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United, so I think a very good bet that this is when the transfer will be confirmed by the two clubs.

Atlanta United kick-off their 2025 MLS season on 22 February at home to Montreal, Miguel Almiron returning to a club where he spent two very successful seasons.

The Mag report – 27 January 2025:

Sky Sports are now reporting that an £11m deal has been agreed between Newcastle United and Atlanta United, for the transfer of Miguel Almiron.

The broadcaster reports that the agreement sees an initial £8m fee agreed, plus £3m future add-ons.

Keith Downie covers Newcastle United for Sky Sports and he says that the deal is close to getting signed off.

He states that the player’s personal terms are at an advanced stage and will soon be concluded with Atlanta United

The Sky Sports man says that Miguel Almiron deal “…has become protracted due to additional layers of procedure required at the US-end for a ‘Designated Player’ transfer.”

Keith Downie adding that once this final paperwork is completed, Miguel Almiron will then undergo his medical.

Eddie Howe asked after the Southampton match about Miguel Almiron, who had been linked with a move back to Atlanta, a late sub when replacing Anthony Gordon and serenaded by the NUFC fans after the final whistle – Saturday 25 January:

“It wasn’t necessarily a farewell.

“It wasn’t planned.

“Just something instinctive, with the supporters singing his name.

“For everything that he’s given me and the football club, I thought it was only right he shared that with the supporters.”

Craig Hope of The Mail putting this excellent video on Twitter, the NUFC fans singing for Miggy Almiron:

Eddie Howe was asked about the Miguel Almiron situation on Friday, during his pre-Southampton press conference – Friday 24 January:

“I think Miggy’s head has been very, very solidly here.

“He has been brilliant in training this week.

“I have seen not one moment where I thought, oh, I need to address this, or speak to him, or have a deeper conversation.

“I think we are both aware of the situation.

“Yes, there is interest in him from other clubs.

“There is potential, a chance he could leave before the window closes, but until that moment and if that moment never arrives, he’s still a valuable member of the squad.
