Both Middlesbrough and Norwich City should try and re-sign Aaron Ramsey on loan from Burnley this summer.

Heading in towards pre-season, both Middlesbrough and Norwich City are beginning new chapters with new managers and fresh squads, but both sides should be targeting a former player this summer.

Aaron Ramsey, who came through the academy at Aston Villa, enjoyed a couple of loan spells with Boro and the Canaries before joining Burnley on a permanent basis in the summer of 2023.

However, after becoming a bit of a fringe player in the Premier League, Ramsey suffered a dreadful injury just as he was breaking into the Clarets’ first-team that left him sidelined for 13 months.

The 22-year-old brother of Jacob, who is still at Villa, has begun to work his way back to full fitness, but it would appear unlikely that Scott Parker relies on him too much in the intensity and the pressure of the top-flight, when he is desperate for minutes to get back to playing regularly.

That is where both Middlesbrough and Norwich should pounce on the attacking midfielder and he would fit in well at both clubs under their respective new managers.

Ramsey would fit in well with Rob Edwards

Ramsey, who is estimated to earn £25,000 per week at Turf Moor according to Capology, thrived at the Riverside in the second-half of the 2022/23 campaign, under the management of Michael Carrick.

Playing in a fluent and almost overly attacking system during Carrick’s first few months in charge at the Riverside, Ramsey complimented ‘Boro’s other star attackers such as Chuba Akpom and Cameron Archer extremely well.

However, it was Ramsey who was the link and the orchestrator of that impressive attack, capable of drifting way but also simply playing as the out and out number ten.

If Rob Edwards is to arrive at the Riverside and play his three-at-the-back system that he used to gain promotion with both Forest Green Rovers and Luton Town, then it should suit Ramsey very well.

Whether it be as the lone number ten or beginning a partnership with someone in the final third, perhaps recreating the directness and intricacy of that Archer-Akpom-Ramsey front-line with the likes of Morgan Whittaker and Finn Azaz.

Edwards has shown pragmatism in his style of football and so Ramsey would be an ideal fit to get guaranteed minutes at ‘Boro, as well as being able to adapt into both a counter-attacking system, or something a little more possession-dominant.

Liam Manning could get the best out of Ramsey

Norwich is another place where Ramsey would fit both stylistically due to the manager, as well as somewhere he is likely to get guaranteed minutes, despite at first enduring something of an underwhelming loan stint at Carrow Road.

During the first-half of that 2022/23 season, Ramsey had arrived with former Villa boss Dean Smith on loan in Norfolk, and whilst he showed flashes of brilliance, the consistency and raised level wasn’t shown until he moves to Teesside later on in the campaign.

However, having matured and developed further, he would represent something of a coup for a Norwich side seeking to be ambitious in the summer transfer window as they seek a return to the Premier League, and it could well be that they have to replace their current primary creative outlet in Borja Sainz, who is the subject of interest from Athletic Club.

Liam Manning has shown great skill at working with creative number tens and getting them to flourish, and the examples of Scott Twine at Milton Keynes Dons and Anis Mehmeti at Bristol City will give Ramsey confidence of being able to rediscover his form and fluency, should Norwich indeed come calling once again.
