Zlatan Ibrahimovic has bad-mouthed Lionel Messi's teammates at Inter Miami, calling them "statues" and stating the blame shouldn't be on the Argentine.
After a good run-out in the FIFA Club World Cup, Inter Miami said their final farewell to the competition yesterday. Unfortunately for the Herons, they bowed out in the worst possible way, calling for mercy against a rampant PSG team who hammered them 4-0 in Atlanta.
Of course, Inter Miami shouldn't be judged for being beaten by the champions of Europe. After all, PSG is the most in-form team in the world and was always the favorite to beat Miami. Heck, they'll probably go the whole way and win the competition.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a club legend of PSG and a notorious MLS figure. Despite not making the Hall of Fame due to the lack of longevity, Zlatan's stay in the States was short but sweet, scoring the most amount of goals in the first 50 MLS games of any player.
So, Zlatan knows a thing or two about effort levels and he thinks that Messi's teammate show a lack of it. Well, that's putting it kindly.
In his own words (translated to English), Zlatan said: "Messi's defeat? No no, don't talk about the defeat as if it was his fault! Messi didn't lose, Inter Miami did! Have you seen this team? Messi plays among statues, not teammates! If he was in a real team, in Paris, in Manchester, in any big team, you would have seen the real lion."
Ouch, that's gotta sting.
The Swede, who is recognized as one of the best goal scorers of all-time, sought to defend Messi but instead, the standout is that he completely cooked all of Messi's teammates.
Look, Inter Miami isn't the complete package. It's easy to sit there and say that it should be, given the amount of money spent. However, the money is spent on a handful of positions, not the entire team.
Inter Miami knows what's needed to succeed but unfortunately, it cannot be applied instantly. Achieving success in any sport is a process, and MLS is no different.
Truth be told, more physicality is needed from Inter Miami. Sure, a few technical stars are great but what happens when that approach falls through?
Over the weekend, the Herons were taught a very harsh lesson in European brutality. Now, Inter must address this and add more of a brute presence to its own team.
